The sultan of Turkey, Abdul Hamid II, invited Grant to his private stables to hear the general’s views on his magnificent stock of Arabian horses. To Grant’s surprise, the sultan offered him two horses of his choosing. At first he refused; then, realizing this would offend his host, he accepted. Grant selected a dappled gray and an iron gray, both exhibiting the distinctive characteristics of the Arabian breed: superbly shaped head, large, soft eyes, and long tail.
