If the people who run the government get to decide what speech is permissible, or which religion is true, we’re in a world of trouble. It’s not just that they might be wrong (and—let’s steady ourselves for some big news—government officials are often wrong, about a whole lot of things). It’s that even if they’re right, no one can be compelled to believe something. No one’s mind can be changed with a billy club.
