I already know how the book will end as I finish the second chapter. They will go home. They are not like me, already home. They have journeys to make first.
Oddly the more she lists her woes, the more cheerful she becomes.
There is a laugh from the bank and quickly the noise of someone else moving towards me. I am surprised when Sul draws level, his arms moving in long graceful arcs through the water. “Are we racing or not?”
As I climb, he reaches a hand towards me to help me out. I freeze then, staring at it. “Come on, Efa.” His bright eyes are unafraid, reassuring. I put my wet hand in his and he pulls me up onto the bank. For a second he forgets his own strength and I’m pulled against him, feeling the warmth of his body against mine briefly
We wait until we’re back at Zelat and eventually, at some point, there’ll be a chance.” “And if there isn’t one?” “Then I’m staying twenty months. So we can all leave together. I don’t trust the Sezel to let us go when he says. We all get out together or none of us do.”
