Built in a natural basin on sandy ground planted with vines and fruit trees, its walls were lit by the winter’s sunshine during the day, while at night the masonry flickered by the flames of glass oil lamps, allowing watchful sentries to peer down at anyone who approached the four fortified gatehouses.
