It was on that train that I had time to consider the first time I started to revere Baldwin, something that had occurred ten years earlier, when I was accepted as an intern at one of the oldest magazines in the country. A friend who let me borrow an issue made my introduction, but only after he spent almost twenty minutes questioning the quality of my high school education.
