I love my niece, but she was not invited.
Infants are miniature devils. Mine included. And I love them. Including their downfalls: the snotty noses and incessant crying and inability to carry intellectual conversations.
“So you’re going to let your three-year-old, who can’t even choose matching clothes, decide her position in the media?” Rose caps her lipstick like she’s sheathing a sword. “Jane has style…” She rolls her eyes and huffs. “It might be unconventional but it’s hers.”
Loren might not have been a Calloway sister, but he’s been more of a brother to me than any other man in my life.
Loren Hale is not the monster in his son’s eyes. He’s the hero.
“This is my daddy.” Moffy motions to me with his thumb. “He’s got two jobs.” He holds up two fingers. “He owns Hale Co. and Halway Comics. The baby stuff is alright but the comics are soooo cool, and my mommy owns this café and comic book store where all the comics go. She’s awesome.”
“Will you remember?” he asks, fear creasing his eyes for the first time. “Remember what?” “That I loved you.”
