She looked down at her sleeve to see if her heart had slid out from her chest. This man did not need to change. He was perfect just the way he was.
I would rather have had nothing and been loved like I was everything than have everything and feel like a commodity for them to show off.”
But he’d spent his life doing things to protect others and putting himself last. Just this once, he wanted to feed the lover’s heart he possessed, regardless of the killer’s skin he wore.
Truman lay with Kennedy, tenderly whispering to her as she dozed off.
“Sweet dreams, little princess. You’re safe. You’re loved. I’m right here.”
Beneath all that rough armor was the kindest, gentlest, most loyal man she could ever imagine.
his bravery, his loyalty, his crime. Hearing his confession didn’t wipe away what she felt for him. The words weren’t delete buttons; they
But the note he left today with the picture of the dragon contained a piece of his soul—Chasing the dragon is slang for inhaling the vapor from heated morphine, heroine, oxycodone, and other drugs. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to slay the dragon that lured my mother into death and swallowed my brother whole. We miss you. Tru.
“Stop me now if you’re going to stop me, because I’ve thought about making love to you, I’ve thought about fucking you, and I’ve thought about begging for your forgiveness—and once our clothes are off, you’re getting all of me. I won’t be able to stop.”
“I’ve gone my whole life not being touched the way you touched me last night.” His words were laced with deep emotions. “I want to make love to you, but what I want more than that is to be close to you and to feel everything that’s brewing between us. To see your sleepy smile as you touch me and hear all those things you said to me last night. I never thought…I never imagined…” He embraced her, his cheek resting against the side of her head. “I never thought I needed anyone, but I’m starting to think I was just waiting for you.”
Tru.” Breathless. Always breathless. “I’ve never had enough. Please be too much. I need too much. I need you.”
“In a perfect world,” she said softly. “We both would have had loving parents, and you never would have faced what you did. We didn’t grow up in a perfect world, but you’re my perfect.”
“I think I need to make a whole new prince outfit for my shop. Prince Truman, because no prince, fictional or real, could ever hold a candle to you.”
“You told me something bad was going to happen and to wait for you. And I promised I would.”
“You said, ‘Don’t worry, sweet girl. It’s going to take a little time, but together we’ll do all the things we missed out on.’”
“I want to wrap you up in me until you can feel how much I want you. I want to make you feel as wanted as you make me feel, because I want you, Gemma—all of you. I’ve never felt like this before. I feel like this is my first time.”
Chin up, little lady. The sun’s still shining.’”
“If there’s one thing I’ve realized with Kennedy and Lincoln,” he said quietly, “it’s that whether they’re yours in the traditional sense or not doesn’t matter. The heart doesn’t care about bloodlines or birth parents. It just seems to know how to love in the same way our lungs know how to breathe.”
“I’m falling so hard for you, Gemma. I want to right all the wrongs you’ve had done to you.”
Her limbs tingled, her insides pulsed, and when he buried his face in the tangles of her hair and grunted out her name, she exploded in a firestorm of sensations. Aware of every pulse of his release, every beat of his heart, every frantic breath he took, she knew, without a shadow of a doubt, she wasn’t falling for him. She’d already jumped.
“Mm.” She kissed him again. “Your kisses complete me, but they never wreck me.”
You’re not oppressively protective, Tru Blue. You’re lovingly protective. There’s a huge difference.”
“Sweet girl, I can’t offer you glamour or glitz, but I can offer you ice-cream stains, homemade fairy tales, and midnight kisses.”
“I don’t want glamour or glitz. Everything I could ever want is right here on this sidewalk. Yes,
Tru Blue. I’ll marry you.”
