Hence Owenite Socialism always contained two elements which never wholly fused: the philanthropy of the Enlightenment, devising “span-new systems” according to principles of utility and benevolence: and the experience of those sections of workers who selected notions from the Owenite stock, and adapted or developed them to meet their particular context.
