Much of the language used in telling the Christian story is directly related to Yom Kippur. One can hardly escape in any Christian worship service some variation of what has become the “mantra” of Christianity: “Jesus died for my sins.” That mantra is present overtly and covertly in our hymns, in our prayers and in most of our sermons. The nature of a mantra is to assume that its meaning is self-evident and thus does not ever need to be explained.
