It was there, sitting in the lunchroom, trying to make conversation with seven curious strangers, that I first saw them.
“You really should stay away from me,” he warned. “I’ll see you in class.”
“I decided as long as I was going to hell, I might as well do it thoroughly.”
About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him—and I didn’t know how potent that part might be—that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
I stared back, struggling to think clearly in spite of his face, to find some way to explain. As I searched for the words, I could see him getting impatient; frustrated by my silence, he started to scowl. I lifted my hand from my neck, and held up one finger. “Let me think,” I insisted. Five miles. I didn’t answer, so that he wouldn’t hear my voice crack in panic. Five miles of treacherous roots and loose stones, trying to twist my ankles or otherwise incapacitate me. This was going to be humiliating.
“Would you understand what I meant if I said I was only human?”

“And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…,” he murmured. I looked away, hiding my eyes as I thrilled to the word. “What a stupid lamb,” I sighed. “What a sick, masochistic lion.”
casually—to prove, I’m sure, that he remembered all my human frailties. So I clutched my throat with both hands and stared at him with wide eyes. Shock crossed his face. “Kidding!” I snickered. “And you said I couldn’t act!”
“Afraid of a needle,” he muttered to himself under his breath, shaking his head. “Oh, a sadistic vampire, intent on torturing her to death, sure, no problem, she runs off to meet him. An IV, on the other hand…”
“Alice already saw it, didn’t she?” I guessed. “That’s why the things she says upset you. She knows I’m going to be like you… someday.” “She’s wrong. She also saw you dead, but that didn’t happen, either.” “You’ll never catch me betting against Alice.”
“Like I said, as long as it makes you happy… as long as it’s what’s best for you.”
