In modern times, the UK seeks to insert itself into the great post-war Franco-German alliances. Failing that, it seeks alliances among other, smaller, member states to build enough support to challenge policies with which it disagrees. For several centuries, the British sought to ensure that there was not an overwhelmingly dominant power on the continent. This policy continued during EU membership, and will in the future, whether the UK is a member or not.
