Slowly yet steadily, a new if small Indian middle-class emerged, educated in English and entering government service or professions like teaching, medicine and the law. In the bureaucracy (which remained white at senior levels) and also in the professions, sections of Punjab’s Hindus—chiefly Khatris, Aroras, Brahmins and Banias—advanced far more rapidly than the province’s more numerous Muslims.
