I think he had something like a Slough of Despond in his mind – like an internal mire that he carried with him everywhere he went. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been so fearful of everything.

Mental illness

I am a man of no bodily strength at all, nor of mind, but I thought if all I can do is crawl, I’ll spend my life in the pilgrim’s way.
