The cold was a searing reminder that everything had its season and its turn, its life before death. And nothing—and no one—lasted forever.
“Love and kindness and loyalty.” His voice went soft. “The things you cannot control, that cannot be bought, stolen, or negotiated, are the most powerful forces in this world. Over power, position, or money, love will win every time.”
“All change starts with one person pissed off enough to get their hands dirty.”
“There isn’t a hell in the void that could keep me from you, Milla. I’d suffer for a lifetime to have another moment on your lips.”
“Don’t tempt me to find some, Nicolai. I’m not in the right mind to be merciful.” “She’s stunning when she’s homicidal, isn’t she, cousins?”
He was danger and darkness and deliverance, and he was every desire of my soul embodied.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he whispered, dipping his head to my ear. “You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve seen.”
“If it’s not a bath, a seven-hour nap, and a pair of pants, I don’t want it.”
“If what happened at the prison wasn’t demonstration enough, allow me to be very clear on how I handle people threatening to take my wife from me,” I said. “Start clarifying why you want her so much, or I’ll forget my manners.”
“In the hollow places, the body mass you lost when they deprived you of food, I see where your tenacity filled you with willpower. Every scar discoloring your skin was a battle fought and won, and a reminder of each time you called on your strength to fight back, to live.”
“Your laugh is a song of victory, proving you faced their worst and not only survived, but came out with joy still in your heart. And that fucking smile, not to mention your eyes—the light still shining in your eyes—they are beacons to me, guiding me to my true home as they have since the first time I caught a glimpse of them.”
“This body might feel and look different, Milla, but every change reminds me of how much you fought their cruelty. This body got you through Hightower, and for that reason, I will worship every sign of its resilience.”
“You can be called anything you like, Camilla, but your title will never change what you truly are to me.” “And what is that?” I asked. Bringing both of my hands to his lips, he kissed the spot they overlapped. “Mine.”
“Never. You don’t have to compete for something that is already yours.”
“You are different. You are my wife, Milla. There is nothing that would keep me from you, nothing I wouldn’t sacrifice.”
“You’re just like our father. Only cared about making her happy at the expense of the rest of us.” If that made me similar to Giovanni Marchese, then so be it. “Am I?” I said, feigning interest. “Perhaps that’s why Milla calls me Daddy every night.”
“Don’t you dare silence those pretty sounds for my sake, Milla. Let the city hear you if you want to be heard. Remind them all that I serve you. There’s no one else I’d get on my knees for, princess.”
“It sounds like you’re planning to keep me forever, Attano.” His hands slipped from my waist, drifting lower. “I’ve got lots of plans for you. They all end in forever.”
But when I saw my reflection in his eyes, I could only feel beautiful.
“Worth it all.” “What?” I asked. “You. You were worth everything.”
“The things we whisper to the shadows have a tendency to come true.”
Don’t trust the blonde bastards.
“Tell me you love me every day. Don’t miss a single morning.” My fingers combed through her wet hair. “I’ll tell you every day, until our last sunrise. And even then, when we cross the veil, I’ll whisper it through the void until my voice fills Oblivion. I love you, Camilla.”
In a house full of rats, I was the snake from the garden they should’ve killed when they had the chance.
“Is there a single certainty in tomorrow, Milla? I’ll take the risk if you take it with me.”
“You are my family now, Camilla. I go where you go, till death takes me.”
