I listened, Jackson didn’t. He remained on his feet, looming over us like one of those scowling gargoyles attached to the exterior walls of medieval cathedrals.
“I wouldn’t dream of it, Miss Paquin. I firmly believe that the cosmos is conspiring against the two of us going on fake dates and is communicating its grievances via gruesome murder attempts. That makes total logical sense to me, which is why I’m saying we should just go on a real one, instead—see if it likes that better.”
A card jumped out of the deck she was shuffling, landing smack in the middle of the table. This one did have a label on it. In bold white letters etched into a matte-black background, the card screamed: DEATH. Oh good.
His grin was devastating. “Best friends for liiife,” he teased in a shocking, sing-songy voice. Like a dork. And when I was done giggling over it, he murmured, “I love you, Jamie.”
