“If you’re into self-immolation and dying, I can easily arrange it for you. No need to involve other species.”
“But what about the martyr character arc I’ve always wanted?”
“Before I leave, I think I need to hold you for a minute.”
His teeth clench. There’s a flicker of something unreadable in his face. “If I come back and something has happened to you, Serena, I’m going to be so fucking pissed.”
He comes closer, clearly unaware that I’m scary and unpredictable.
“No one ‘lets’ me do stuff or go places,” I point out tiredly. “That’s not how it works, Koen.” “If you were mine, it would. And clearly, you fucking should be.”
He easily resigned himself to a lifetime without her, but… Simply put, he is unwilling to contemplate a universe in which she no longer exists.
“Aw. Thank you. Anything else I’m allowed to do, Alpha?” His hand comes up to snatch my chin. “You could be fucking good, for once.”
Exactly what I need. I got you, it tells me. I no longer have to control myself, because he’s doing that for me. I have permission to beg and thrash in his arms.
My afterlife will just be me, watching you move around my house in nothing but my clothes. Knowing that you’re warm and fed and safe and so damn soft.”
“I think…this is going to hurt, Koen.” “After, yeah. But not yet.” “Not yet.”
