I glance at her out of the corner of my eye. She’s grinning. “First of all, what hill was this you were willing to die on?” she asks. “Marriage.” “Oh, Tate.” She sighs as if this might kill her. “You’re proof God can’t give brains and beauty to the same person.”
“This family is loud,” she says softly. “They’re tactile—definite huggers.” I grin. “They’re a little overwhelming.” “Oh, girl, I know. But it’s worth it. Trust me. They will fight for you,” she says. “They will move mountains for you. Because if you’re Gannon’s, or Renn’s, or Chloe’s, or Tate’s—you belong to us all.”
“I love you, Aurora Johnson. I’d rather have you in my life and arms and not be married, than not have you at all.”
“You don’t think having a baby together is going too fast?” I ask. She laughs. “I’m forty, okay? I don’t have much longer left.” “Forty?” I make a face, and she slaps me on the chest. “Damn, girl. We better skip the party and get busy.” “Keep it up and I’ll rescind my proposal.” “It’s written down. It’s pretty much a contract at this point.”
“First, let’s clarify this,” he says. “We are in a monogamous, committed relationship. Right?” I extend my arms and give him a look. “If you fuck anyone else, I swear to God, I’ll go to prison.”
He smirks, nodding his head. “Okay, but I do have a black lace bra upstairs. You can’t get pissed if you find it.” Oh, I’m pissed. “From who?” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest. “This hottie I banged at a hotel the other night.” I start to climb off him, but he holds me down. “She was so fucking sexy. I’m still obsessed with her tits.” “I fucking hate you.” He kisses me despite me trying to pull away. “Her name was Kelly.” I pull back and smack his chest. He finds this way too entertaining for how close he just came to death.
He shakes his head, amused. “You can literally do whatever you want. Hire. Fire. Move. Adjust. Change. Edit. Say no. Say yes. It’s yours, gorgeous.”
Tate Brewer was only supposed to be a one-night stand. But being tossed on the bed while his lips travel south makes me realize that sometimes situations are meant to be. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.
