“Mine,” I say against her mouth.
“Sit next to me in the car ride home.” She hums. “Why?” “So I can hold your hand.” I shrug and press my mouth to hers. “Or your thigh. Whichever is more accessible.”
We were in Edinburgh and a guy opened the door for her while I was at the ATM, and I imagined his body in a morgue and me behind bars.
“Barry said he can hide me – get me a new identity and a new life. I could come to America.” He’s silent, and then he says, “You’re going to annoy me by visiting every day, aren’t you?”
“Shut up.” I shut up.
“Ty moy, Vesnushki.”
“Get on your hands and knees,” he says, gesturing to the spiral staircase. “And crawl up them.” Swallowing, I glance up then back over at him. “You want me to crawl up the stairs?” “That’s what I said.”
“That’s my girl,” he groans against my mouth. “I like when you do as you’re told.”
I keep reminding myself that I’m doing all of this to protect her. Because not only is she my weakness, but she’s also my strength – my main reason for continuing, the air to my fucking lungs. When I’m around her, I feel like the person I was before – the teenager who fell in love with a beautiful girl and had no idea how to handle the emotion. The kid who always looked at her, even before I kissed her for the first time.
She still makes me nervous, even when I’m following her as she crawls up my spiral staircase,
“I want to be enough for you, my little princess,” I say, choking up for some reason. “I’ll never get drunk around you, and I’ll stay off the cigarettes. I’ll even stop smoking joints when you get here. I’m going to make sure I’m the best version of myself, so I can be a good daddy for you.”
“I belong to Kade Mitchell.”
They had a girl by the way. A home birth. Her name is Eva.” “I don’t care,” he huffs.
“I’m so sorry. I’m so fucking sorry for not knowing what you went through or giving you a chance to explain what happened. I should have heard you out. I should have stayed.
“I n-never stopped loving you.” My heart is fucking sore, but I need to get this last part out. I know I’m dying. But the only thing I’m worried about is her getting the fuck away from those evil pricks. “I will… will always lo-love you, Freckles. Go, live your life and be free. “I think I like her company more than yours,” he says, stretching his arms above his head, his white top riding up ever so slightly to show that, even at his age, he has abs for days. “But that isn’t much of a competition, since you’re a pain in my ass.”
“You are the worst visitor I’ve ever had in my life.” “Yet I’m still your favourite.”
“We have an emergency announcement. Reports say that Tobias Mitchell has escaped his institution this afternoon and is currently at large. The murderer and psychopath was given a life sentence over twenty years ago.”
“I would like to stress to everyone that this individual is extremely dangerous and may not be in touch with reality. Do not approach him. If you have any information on his whereabouts, please contact your local station.”
