“Spark the flames, Ever.” “Ignite the infernos,” I answer automatically. “Ash the embers,” we both say at the same time,
There’s a lilt to his voice that speaks of a world long forgotten. A place of fairy rings and fair folk and an island once painted in innumerable shades of green. One that’s now nothing more than ash and rock.
He’s an enigma. And for a second, I feel myself being drawn in by it like he’s a black hole and I’m some orbiting ship with no choice but to succumb.
his hold suddenly tightens…almost possessively.
I haven’t revealed, which means I can’t bond, forced or otherwise. I’m safe on that front at least.
“Who.” Aeson takes another step. “Did.” And another. “This.” Tahir scrambles back, and several drakes shout orders for everyone to move out of the way. “To.” Blay charges. At first, I think he’s going to tackle Aeson, but he streaks past, diving for one of the massive archways instead. A mountain-sized purple dragon erupts out of him, the beast launching itself off the outer lip of the tower. An enraged roar reverberates through the dragon stone floors, walls, and ceiling as Blay’s dragon streaks away. “You.”
he watches my mouth like it’s a precious flower blooming under the rarest of circumstances.
“Turns out that my tears have healing properties
His gaze on me shouldn’t matter. My interest in his thoughts should be nothing more than a means to an end. His touch should be repulsive. And yet, none of those things are true.
It took me a long time to accept that needing help wasn’t a reflection of weakness or some sort of failing on my part. Knowing that you can’t do everything alone, that no one is meant to, takes strength and fortitude.
“Start with Aeson Noctis,” Nixy proffers with a wag of her eyebrows and a wide grin. “If he wants to use you, use him right back. Males spill their souls when they’re spilling their seed. Pretend like you’re falling for the trap. Flirt with him, fuck him even, and then pump him for information.”
“Ah,” Nixy exclaims. “One of those armor-winged, weapon-toting, camouflaging species of butterflies. Got it.” I smile. “Exactly. I think they’re from the genus Fuck Around and Find Out.”
Aeson Noctis likes ’em feisty. I can do feisty.
“Looks like you win, Commander.” I finally look up at him and instantly regret it. He looks angry, wholly unrepentant, and devastatingly beautiful. “Not yet, not completely, but I will.”
Part of me is tempted to call Aeson out for setting me up, for wanting to use me. And another part of me is tempted to let him…to see if riding his cock will release my dragon.
An ache ripples through my own memories of my brother, because Lorn knew him better than I did. They’d been best friends practically since birth. I had days with Novak. In comparison, Lorn had a lifetime of memories with him.
“He always hung the mirrors in a room so he could see Four Tiers and Paragon City in their reflection.
“He told me it was so he could always see a reflection of what he was fighting for and the people who would suffer if he wasn’t the best king he could possibly be every second of every day.”
Death and I have an unspoken agreement. We like to flirt and toy with one another, but we keep it cutesy and never go all the way.
“That’s better,” Aeson murmurs, his lips skimming the shell of my ear. “Breathe me in. Feel me. You’re safe. It’s just us. No one else is here.”
If I reached my hand inside your pants right now, would you be wet for me, Claws? Are you dripping for me? What kind of sounds will you make when I play with this pussy? Should we find out?”
“Get nice and ready for me. Then I’ll lick you clean before I fuck the stubborn denial out of you.”
Aeson and I can never be anything but enemies. He may not know that yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Yes, he burns bright and hot, and the cold dark parts of my broken soul crave that heat, but it could never work. A moth will never survive its love for fire. Ice will always bow to the sun. And I can never be Aeson Noctis’s mate, not when I’m here to become his reckoning.
“Spark the flames you need to see by, dragoness,” Nixy says evenly.
“Come now, mate. I thought you liked my dirty mouth,” he purrs, and I swear I feel it in my fucking clit.
watch him as he goes, wondering if this is the only future we’ll ever have, one of us tentatively reaching while the other is perpetually walking away.
“Ever, you are a fucking dragon! Just because you can’t reveal or manifest affinities doesn’t change what you are at your core. Aeson is your Bonded Mate and you’re his.”
“I can handle your sharp edges, Claws.
“Cut me. Hurt me. Destroy me. I’ll happily bleed for you, Ever. Every drop is yours already.”
He gives me a second to adjust to the press of his body against mine, while razor sharp wings do their worst. And then Aeson starts to lead me, and for once, I follow.
He breathes me in deeply and holds me like a newly discovered treasure that he has no intention of ever letting go.
