“Spark the flames, Ever.” “Ignite the infernos,” I answer automatically. “Ash the embers,” we both say at the same time, a small chuckle escaping us as we finish the chant we’ve exchanged back and forth since we were kids.
Scion Lorn Noctis, firstborn son of King Kathal Noctis, and Crown Prince of The Dragon Horde.
“I’m Ever Tenebrae, daughter of the slaughtered King Merik Tenebrae, and the last surviving Syphon of my massacred line. Trust me, Spare, I’m not safe anywhere, least of all with you.”
What is wrong with you? And I swear if you give me that road pancake bullshit again, I’ll take you over my fucking knee.”
“Who.” Aeson takes another step. “Did.” And another. “This.” Tahir scrambles back, and several drakes shout orders for everyone to move out of the way. “To.” Blay charges. At first, I think he’s going to tackle Aeson, but he streaks past, diving for one of the massive archways instead. A mountain-sized purple dragon erupts out of him, the beast launching itself off the outer lip of the tower. An enraged roar reverberates through the dragon stone floors, walls, and ceiling as Blay’s dragon streaks away. “You.”
I’m, without a doubt, going to get eaten, and probably not in the way I’d enjoy.
“That mouth of yours is going to get you into trouble one day,” he warns, but something in his eyes, in his tone, makes it feel more like an invitation than an admonition.
buttery little bastard
“If this place is doing it for you, Claws, wait until you see my private gym.”
“Careful, Spare, or I’ll think you like me,” I taunt, needing space between us but not wanting to step back and make him think I’m retreating. “Careful, Claws, or I just might.”
‘Ducky, let’s go find you the treat you deserve,’
concern. I was really hoping for a bow-staff or maybe a missile launcher to help me go up against the scion’s strength and size.
When it comes to dragons, size most definitely matters. Any dragoness would agree.
I’m safe. I’m protected. I can do this…even if it hurts.
“He always hung the mirrors in a room so he could see Four Tiers and Paragon City in their reflection.
Lorn shakes his head. “He told me it was so he could always see a reflection of what he was fighting for and the people who would suffer if he wasn’t the best king he could possibly be every second of every day.”
though. Death and I have an unspoken agreement. We like to flirt and toy with one another, but we keep it cutesy and never go all the way.
“That’s better,” Aeson murmurs, his lips skimming the shell of my ear. “Breathe me in. Feel me. You’re safe. It’s just us. No one else is here.”
She brushed my hair out of my face and cupped my cheek and said that one day I would discover something infinitely more precious than this breathtaking flower. And when that day came, only then would I start to understand just how much she loved me, because seeing me admire and appreciate her beloved constellation lily brought her more joy and contentment than the flower itself ever did.”
There are a finite number of people in each of our lives who truly love us. That love warms us against the frigid toll life can take. It’s a light that guides us and fortifies us, and losing it leaves us dimmer, leaves our lives darker.
“Don’t be. After her rare declaration of love, she cuffed me on the back of the head and told me not to break it or else.”
smile. “True. Maybe I’ve been staring at the dark for too long and it’s time to look for the light.”
“Spark the flames you need to see by, dragoness,”
“Arms the butterflies?” I ask as I join the keyed up huddle. “Yes, it’s the security measure Nixy programmed at your request,” Azo tells me. My head snaps in the direction of Nixy’s semitransparent visage. “Do the butterflies shoot lasers?” I ask excitedly.
smile. “No, dragoness, I couldn’t get authorization for that…though I did try.”
Bloody scales, that just might be better than lasers.
“You got your asses kicked by…butterflies,” I howl, pointing at the guards before bending at the waist to help me breathe between guffaws. “I’d hardly call it an ass kicking,” Julian grumbles
“A butterfly beatdown?”
I’d say it was a wing whoopin’ at best.”
passive aggressive way of saying nanny nanny boo boo
“Spark the flames. Ignite the infernos. Ash the embers.”
“Stop saying what? Mate?” he asks incredulously. “But isn’t that what you are? My lying, deceiving, infuriating little mate?”
“Come now, mate. I thought you liked my dirty mouth,”
“Not a chance, Claws. You’re staying right here,” he orders, like he has any right. “You can eat my ass with that bossy bullshit, Commander,” I snap.
My rage becomes a wildfire. One I have every intention of incinerating Aeson Noctis in when the door doesn’t open and I realize he just locked me in here.
Motherfucking dragon.
“Where are your guards?” he asks after a beat. I shrug and once again point at the fluttering kaleidoscope. “Best body guards
“He cares for you, you know.” I scoff and roll my eyes. “He’s got a funny way of showing it.” “Mm-hmm,” the scion hums. “I suspect you both do.”
He doesn’t need to know everything about you to form a bond.”
“Bond? That’s not what’s happening here. I can’t bond, I haven’t revealed.”
“You can’t go into estrus unless you’ve revealed, but once you’ve matured, you can absolutely bond.
troubled with each pass. “Ever, you do understand that’s what’s been happening between you and Aeson since you met, right? It’s very serious. You almost sent him into a frenzy the night you got here. He can feel your dragon calling to him. You most definitely triggered a bond.”
What the fuck? Where was any of this in the Growing Up Dragon books the wyverns told us covered the basics? I mean, I knew my education was lacking, but I didn’t know I could be turned into a sex-crazed maniac who’d settle for absolutely anyone if I didn’t hop on the magic dick my instincts decided was just right.
“Your dragon has claimed him too,” he tells me, like it should be obvious. “Bonds aren’t one-sided. That’s the pull you feel. That’s why you’re territorial of him and your nest.”
“My dragon hasn’t claimed him, Lorn. I don’t have a fucking dragon!”
“Ever, you are a fucking dragon! Just because you can’t reveal or manifest affinities doesn’t change what you are at your core. Aeson is your Bonded Mate and you’re his.”
Aeson Noctis is my Bonded Mate. My. Bonded. Mate.
You don’t have to fight him. He’d do anything for you. You’re not alone now.
