slow, intrigued smile kicked up the corner of his mouth. Oh? So you’ve been imagining this, then, have you, Little Osha?
You can own your fantasies with me, Little Osha. There is nothing in this realm or the next that I
won’t give to you if you desire it. All you ever need do is ask.
“From now on, you are Lady of Cahlish.”
“Come now, Osha. Where else would an acolyte kneel to worship but at the altar of his god?”
This pathway is clear, the speaker declared. Receive this gift all in fear and trembling. In the end, it will be your end.
“You are the only thing that keeps my moral compass pointing north, Little Osha,”
“I’d spend the fortunes of the universe to protect you. I’d drain the seas dry. Fell every tree. I would sacrifice the sun from the fucking sky and surrender the stars, too, if I could. But those things aren’t mine to give. All I have is my life. It isn’t much, but I’d spend it and consider the price small if it meant keeping you safe.”
“In Ammontraíeth, is it considered incest if you sleep with your maker? ’Cause it sounds to me like someone was fucking Daddy.”
The pages didn’t listen. They flew through the air and tumbled one over the other, gathering into a ball. Before my eyes, they organized themselves into a single, ordered pile… and then they were a book. Navy blue cloth cover. Thick. A tiny silver butterfly was stamped in foil on the front cover. Other than that, there were no gilded edges. No fancy woven tassel. It was a plain bound book with no extraordinary embellishments… and it landed on the floor at my feet with a thump. Holy gods.
For you, gods blessed. Thank you for loving my boy. —E
You will read things that will prevent you from facing the challenges in front of you for fear of the ones ahead, to the ruin of us all.
Saeris plucked a piece of lint from her skirts. “You were saying?”
would never want that for you. But you don’t have to be one thing here, Saeris. You can be many things. You can wear your leathers and fight every day of the year. I would never ask you not to. But sometimes, if you wanted to… you’re allowed to soften, Saeris. You’re allowed to stop baring your teeth at the world and take a breath. Because I’ve got you.”
