Now the topic had turned to kissing, I found myself lost for words. All I could think about was closing in on her lips and silencing us both. The tension I’d sensed building between us ever since she’d sat down next to me was only amplifying, and I struggled to keep my heart from racing. Even though Anna’s eyes were still narrowed on me in disgust, she wasn’t pulling away from me. If anything, it felt like she was leaning closer. Like she was thinking about kissing me just as vividly as I was imagining kissing her. Like, as much as she hated it, she wanted it too. “I’ve made enough mistakes tonight,” she murmured, almost to herself. While her words suggested she was fighting the pull between us, her voice had softened, weakened, like she was slowly giving in. “What’s one more?” I asked. She started to move toward me, and I edged closer to her. I struggled to believe this was really happening. Anna had never shown the slightest interest in me this way, and yet, it felt so right, like it should have happened long before this. Her lips were just about to brush mine when the door to the pantry burst open and Cress poked her head into the room. “Anna, I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” Cress said when she saw us. “Uh, what are you guys doing in…” Before I knew what was happening, Anna had jerked away from me and, with surprising speed and power, slapped her hand across my face.
