I am her guardian, and she is my charge. She’s the only being who matters to me. I vow to protect her. I’ll live and die for her. I’ll sacrifice everything I am for Alchera.
“As Your Highness knows, we had to send her away,” Janak says. “She had to experience what it’s like to be human and live like they do. She has the most difficult task ahead of her, having to save the chosen ten. The future of humankind depends on her.” I suck in a deep breath while crossing my arms over my chest. I should’ve been allowed to go with Alchera. It’s been pure hell knowing she’s alone on Earth.
My father is the most powerful when it comes to the guardians due to the bond he shares with King Eryon. The closer you grow to your charge, the more powers you attain.
Soon, I’ll be by Alchera’s side, and nothing will ever separate us again for all eternity.
“Did you say your name’s Ryan?” Megan asks from the desk next to ours. “I’m Megan, the head cheerleader. Just say if you need someone to show you around.” Ryan nods at her. “I’m good. Thanks.” When he turns his attention back to me, my jaw drops open. No one dismisses Megan, especially not to talk to
“You’re the only one I wanted to sit next to.” Staring deep into her eyes, I add, “No one else interests me.”
“Our bond is the most important thing to me, Alchera. I live for you, and I’ll die with you, but I will never leave you.”
She’s only your charge, and it doesn’t mean you have a right to claim her. Alchera is the only one who gets to choose who she’ll marry. My brothers are lucky in that regard. Brenna and Thana have chosen them, and it’s made the bond between them so much stronger.
“No one comes before you. I’ll never marry. My life belongs to you.”
“We live together. We die together.” “No,” I sob, shaking my head. “I won’t let you die with me.”
“You are mine,” his growl echoes through me. “Every part of you, Alchera. The only way I can heal you is if you let me in.”
I love Alchera, and over my dead body will I share her with another man. I’ll find a way to make her love me. I just have to.
“You are the only being that matters to me. I will sacrifice everything I am for you.”
My lips take hers roughly, demanding she accepts me once and for all. Because without her, I’m nothing.
“I love you,” I repeat the words, my tone a little gentler. “When I say there’s no one more important to me, I mean in every aspect of my life. Only you matter to me.”
“I’m not kissing you to heal you. I’m kissing you because I want to taste you.”
“Because I desperately need to claim you as mine so no other man can steal you from me.”
“Deep breaths, my little dreamer. Don’t worry. Let me handle everything.”
There’s no guardian and charge. We’re just two people who love each other with our whole beings.
“You’ll never be alone again. It’s you and me forever.” “Forever’s a really long time,” I chuckle. He shakes his head. “And still not long enough with you.”
“If I die, I’ll become a part of you. You’ll always feel me because we share the same soul.”
“You’re my entire being, Alchera.”
“I thank Awo that I exist to be loved by you.” His words are like a soothing balm, dulling the sharp edges inside me. “You are my everything.”
“If we’re ever faced with a life-threatening situation again, don’t break our bond. Promise me that we’ll live and die together. The pain of losing you is too unbearable and the worst torture I can be subjected to.”
I wrap my arms around her, holding her tightly to my chest where the echo of loss still ghosts through my heart. I don’t think it will ever completely fade. The blow I was dealt left a scar on my soul, and it will always serve as a reminder of how important Alchera is to me.
