I am her guardian, and she is my charge. She’s the only being who matters to me. I vow to protect her. I’ll live and die for her. I’ll sacrifice everything I am for Alchera.
“As Your Highness knows, we had to send her away,” Janak says. “She had to experience what it’s like to be human and live like they do. She has the most difficult task ahead of her, having to save the chosen ten. The future of humankind depends on her.” I suck in a deep breath while crossing my arms over my chest. I should’ve been allowed to go with Alchera. It’s been pure hell knowing she’s alone on Earth.
My father is the most powerful when it comes to the guardians due to the bond he shares with King Eryon. The closer you grow to your charge, the more powers you attain.
Soon, I’ll be by Alchera’s side, and nothing will ever separate us again for all eternity.
“You’re the only one I wanted to sit next to.” Staring deep into her eyes, I add, “No one else interests me.”
“Why are you blushing?” Ugh. Just my luck. “I’m not blushing,” I mutter. Ryan tugs at my hoodie, and as it falls back, I quickly glance the other way. “You sure about that?” he teases me.
“Let it go, or I’m getting out of the truck,” I warn him. “You’re cute when you blush,” he says, and as I reach for the handle,
“She is taken. Stay away from her, or I’ll end you.” Ryan’s voice is nothing but a low growl, promising misery and pain.
“Our bond is the most important thing to me, Alchera. I live for you, and I’ll die with you, but I will never leave you.”
“Are you okay with being bonded to me?” He answers without any hesitation, “Of course. It’s an honor.” I feel his breath stir strands of my hair. “Our souls became one when we were bonded. You’re my other half.” God.
“No one comes before you. I’ll never marry. My life belongs to you.”
“So what happens if you want to be with a woman? Or are you celibate?”
“No, I’m not celibate.”
“Don’t do it,” Raighne groans. “I beg you.” Praying to all that’s holy that it will work, I think, “I reject our bond.”
“That’s it.” His palms cradle my face, and he leans forward until I feel his breaths on my lips. “Let me take all your pain.”
“You are mine,” his growl echoes through me. “Every part of you, Alchera. The only way I can heal you is if you let me in.”
I love Alchera, and over my dead body will I share her with another man. I’ll find a way to make her love me. I just have to.
“You are the only being that matters to me. I will sacrifice everything I am for you.”
“You love me?” I ask, stunned by the discovery.
“I love you, Alchera. Why do you think I got upset whenever you spent time with Storm?
“Because I desperately need to claim you as mine so no other man can steal you from me.”
“Deep breaths, my little dreamer. Don’t worry. Let me handle everything.”
“Touch her and die,”
“I thank Awo that I exist to be loved by you.” His words are like a soothing balm, dulling the sharp edges inside me. “You are my everything.”
“Put yourself in my shoes,” I say with a sigh. “I refuse to use you as a pain reliever. You mean so much more to me than that.”
“Alchera! Don’t you fucking dare,” Raighne shouts, his tone desperate and filled with fear. “Don’t do this to us.”
“This isn’t right, Alchera. I would follow you to the darkest pits of the shadowlands, but what you’re asking of me…” With a pleading expression, I place my hand on his arm. “I forgive you, Ares. Do this for me. Take them to safety.” He closes his eyes, intense heartache tightening his features. “You showed me how to be strong. You saved me.”
“I love you so much,” I sob. “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t let them die.” “I understand.” “I wish…I wish…” I’m crying too hard to form a coherent thought. “I’ll be with you until the end. I’m here. I love you, my little dreamer.”
“I reject our bond.” “Don’t, Alchera!” he shouts and I swear I hear his words echo in the wind around me. “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Be happy, Raighne.”
“Don’t moan like that in front of everyone,” Raighne growls in my mind. “Only I get to hear you make that sound.”
