At the beginning of a group-oriented project, I have a class discussion about what constitutes good group work. Once we all agree on the behaviors that fit that designation, I draw up a contract that all the students agree to. The peer assessment and my assessment of each student’s work are then based on those criteria. Because they have contributed to defining the criteria, the students have a pretty clear idea about what is expected of them.
