“You make me feel…not alone. And, Sparrow? I’ve been alone for basically as long as I’ve been breathing. But you? You make it all better.”
“Sparrow,”
“you were always too good for me anyway. It’s better this way.”
Kye was an invisible brand on my bones. Something I carried with me wherever I went, in whatever I did—even if no one ever knew.
Because it didn’t matter if it had been fourteen seconds or fourteen years, he’d always be the boy who’d given me everything.
She could. Always. It didn’t matter if she needed me in the middle of the night or from a million miles away. I’d be there.
My fingers twitched, dying to reach out and tangle in the strands, every part of me so damn attuned to Fallon’s beauty. It was the kind that only grew the longer you looked at her. The way the curve of her smile turned her mouth into a perfect bow I wanted to tug on with my teeth. How the deep blue of her eyes turned stormy with any heightened emotion—good or bad. And her shape—how she fit perfectly against me any time I dared to wrap an arm around her.
Even if I’d only ever have pieces of her. Those tiny shards were better than anything else.
“I want to take them. I want to give them a home. I want to make sure they’re never scared again. I want to make sure they always know they’re wanted. That someone chose them.”
“It’s not because I don’t want to. I’ve been dreaming of you since I was sixteen. You’ve been my one spark of light in the hellish dark. The only good thing in my life. But I won’t risk losing you or the family you gave me. Because I’m sure of one thing: I’ll fuck this up. And I’m not ruining the only good in my life because of it.”
“I need to go in, tackle a mountain of paperwork, and—”
“And you can do it later. First, you need some food. And I want to show you something.”
“What kind of som...

“When I lost you, lost what we were, I needed something to hold on to. I thought if I built the house, if I lived in it, I could still have you with me—the you that you were to me back then. But when they finished it a few years ago, it didn’t feel right…living here without you.”
“You’re my person. The spark in the shadows. You carried me through when I didn’t think I’d survive. So, I’m never going to stop demanding that this world give you everything.”
“I will honor you every day of this marriage. And every day after it’s done. And no matter what comes, my battered and blackened heart will always be yours.”
“I know you think Kye is some big, scary, tattooed monster, but he’s not. He’s the kindest and gentlest man I’ve ever known. And that’s saying something because my father was one of the best.”
“He gave me a safe place to let out everything I was feeling after losing my dad and brother. And he was there for me every step of the way as I tried to move on.”
“They don’t see because they haven’t lived through the messiness we have. Which means they also miss the miracle and gift of finding love amid all the hardship. It’s sweeter for us because we’ve seen so much pain.”
“Sometimes, the pain is worth the beauty in the end.”
I didn’t stop myself from kissing her. I lied and told myself it was because we had an audience, but I knew the truth. It was because I fucking wanted to. I needed her more than anything on this Earth because she was my air. She made it so I could breathe.
“Find your happy, Fal. You deserve it more than anyone I’ve ever known.”
No one could make my body come alive like Kye. No one could set my soul aflame. And I knew it would always be that way.
I’d never seen a more beautiful human being. No, that was wrong. I’d never seen a creation in this universe more stunning than Fallon. No work of art or breathtaking landscape. Nothing could compare to her as she walked down the aisle Rhodes had created.
Suddenly, it was just the two of us. My favorite place to be.
“I didn’t want someone else’s promises on my lips.”
“I want to give you my own.”
“You are light, breath. Air. In my darkest moments, it’s always been you who lit my way.”
“You’ve been my safe place from the moment I met you. Safe to feel whatever I needed and give it voice. Safe to be exactly who I was without fear or anxiety. Safe in body and mind.”
“But more than that. You’ve been my home. My resting place. Whenever the world spins too fast or things get too hard, I know I can count on you to pause it.”
“I promise to be your partner and your friend for all my days,”
The moment the metal band was in place, I knew I’d made a mistake. Because I never wanted it to move. Not now, not in a few months, not ever.
“Sparrow, you’re as close to perfection as anything I’ve ever known.”
“If you like your eyes in your head, get them the hell off my wife,”
“What about me, fight master? Finally going to train me on a few things?”
“So?”
“Or do you still think I don’t have what it takes?”
“Never thought you didn’t have what it took.”
“It sure as hell hasn’t seemed like that.”
“Did you ever consider that maybe I didn’t want to be this close to you?”
“That I didn’t trust myself to touch you like this and stop there. If I had let myself be this close, I knew I couldn’t stop. I knew I’d want every damn part of you.”

don’t you ever say a word to disparage my husband ever again.”
“Gripping my fingers like you’re never gonna let me go.”
“Tell me. Tell me what you want. What you like. Show me.”
“Guess what. It didn’t work. I can still taste you. I still feel your hands on my skin. Your fingers moving inside me.”
