And just like that, on the worst day of the year, I feel my lips tilt up in amusement.
“Isaiah, please.” Those two little words stop me in my tracks. My name. She sounds good saying my name.
But deep down, Kennedy trusts me.
MY Kennedy is here.
Fate happened.
“I should warn you, Ken, I like it when you’re mean. It does something to me.”
Kennedy tossed her heels in a trash can on the strip, and I noted the red bottoms on those while I was carrying them, so I made sure to pull them right back out from the bin. Sober her would be pissed she threw away such expensive shoes.
If we do this, I’m basically using you.” “Sounds terrible. Please, Kennedy, use me all you want.”
“Did you want my attention that night, Kenny?” She chuckles into the phone. “Good night, Isaiah.”
“Hi, wifey.”
he’s just standing there, hands in his pockets and a shit-eating grin on his face.
I’ll probably snuggle you so hard you won’t be able to breathe anyway.”
My better half, she forgot hers.”
Do I want to be touched?
“Yes.”
“By me?” “Yes.”
“You look like you’re going to say something a little bit evil, break my heart, and I’ll end up thanking you for it.”
Kennedy is stiff in her seat next to me so I gently drape my arm on the back of her chair, fingertips toying with the strap of her dress.
I try to distract her by brushing my fingertips along the top of her shoulder, dusting the back of her neck.
She presses her lips to mine.
“The real nice place you had in mind is Chili’s.”
