“Hey, Kenny!” I call out and she stops, reluctantly facing me. “I promised I’d make sure the other guys don’t give you a hard time, but I never said anything about me.” Her lips slightly part and I shoot her with another wink. “See you around, Doc.”
Travis nudges my shoulder. “So, who is she?” On this day, where everything feels like a sign, I don’t hesitate when I say, “My future wife.”
There’s been only one woman who has held my interest and now that she’s no longer wearing another man’s engagement ring, spending my time with anyone else holds zero appeal.
“Have I told you lately how much I dislike you?” “Mmm,” he hums. “I should warn you, Ken, I like it when you’re mean. It does something to me.”
“I probably would’ve proposed a handful of times by now if you were. Nice. Mean. I’ll take you any way I can get you.”
“California, huh? Did you know that’s my least favorite place?” “And when did you decide that?” “About two minutes ago.”
“Kennedy, I have feelings for you.”
“Yeah, but I’m getting the information, and it’s only making me like you more. Let me get to know you. I’ve been trying to for three years now.”
I think I like when Isaiah looks at me.
“I finally married the girl I’ve been obsessed with for years.”
“When have I ever been able to say no to you?!”
“Does this mean the honeymoon phase is over already?” “I hate you!” “See you at home, wifey!”
“You’d be making a mistake, Mr. Remington. Kennedy is not only great at her job, but the entire team loves having her on staff. Nothing has changed. The only difference between today and last season is that now I get to call her my wife.”
“Why would I go along pretending that the wedding I had with this girl I’ve had a crush on for years is legitimate? Why would I force myself to spend time with her for an entire season to make sure she lands her dream job at the end of it? Hmm, I’m not sure, Kenny. Let’s think about that.”
“Nah. I just like annoying you. You get that flat line across your lips and that death glare. Very hot, Ken.”
“Just think of this as one big game.” His tone is low and deep when he leans down to my ear and whispers, “C’mon wife. Play along.”
but all I’ve heard is that I got six long months to get my wife to fall for me.
Looking up, I watch him, this man who smiles too much and memorizes the color of my hair.
“Yeah, well we’ve got history too, Kennedy. You just haven’t been paying attention.”
The Mrs Can you call me? “Miller, I gotta go. Kennedy needs me to call her.” She barks a laugh. “And you call your brother pathetic.”
“Because he’s watching and I want him to know that you’re mine.”
and I’ll let Kennedy believe this is all for show, but in truth, I’ve been dying for her to let me touch her for years. Been dying to have her attention. Been dying to simply sit and eat dinner next to the girl.
“Excuse me?” I stand from my seat. “Watch your fucking words when you’re speaking to my wife.”
“You don’t have to apologize. You can kiss me anytime you want, Kenny. Please kiss me anytime you want.”
“But I want to be. Comfortable, I mean. With affection.”
“You’ll get there.” She chews on her lower lip, eyes nervously finding mine, with a voice so quiet I’m certain I mishear her when she says, “Will you teach me?”
But still I don’t break my pose. Instead, I stretch further, ass on display as much as I can make it, because for the first time since I’ve known him, I want to tempt my husband.
“Eyes are up here, wifey.”
“I’m a doctor, Rhodes. Aced anatomy, in fact. I know where your eyes are located. I just don’t care right now.”
The way I see it, no other man ever will.
“I may as well be wearing one of those things.” He nods towards my ring. “And you should probably stop looking at me. My fiancée is kind of scary when she gets jealous.”
“She’s not going to be dating anybody. I just need the next few months to inform her of that.”
“I’m not laughing at you, baby.” Moving her hair away from her face, I tuck it behind her ears. “I just find it funny that you’re so in your head right now, while I’m over here desperate for you to touch me and knowing there’s nothing you could do that I’m not going to like.”
“You still doing okay?” I whisper. She nods against me. “I like touching you.” “Yeah?” I let my hands drop a bit further south. “And I’d like it if you touched me too, Isaiah.” Fuck. Me.
She smiles into me, my wife who has no idea how fucking badly I’ve wanted this. Wished for this. Dreamed of this.
“Was that okay?” I can’t help but laugh in disbelief. “Shut up.” Pulling her hips into me, I make sure she feels just how hard I am. “You know that was more than fucking okay. It was goddamn perfect.”
In what world does she think she’s going to start seeing anyone else after this? After me? Not a chance in hell. To make sure of it, I lean in, taking her mouth once again. It’s softer this time as my palm runs the column of her spine, up and over her shoulder to glide along her left arm. I stop when I find her hand holding onto the back of my neck.
Travis and Cody follow behind, but not before Cody turns back to us with his hand over his heart. “Love this for you guys.”
“Excuse me?” Isaiah whirls in his direction. “What did you just call her?” There’s absolutely no confusion on Cody’s smirking face as he walks backwards towards the exit. “What? I called her Kenny. Isn’t that what you call her?”
“And in what fucking world does that mean you get to call her that?” Cody’s head falls back in laughter, muttering “Lovesick, motherfucker” as he leaves the training room.
“No.” He takes a sip of whatever is in his cup. “I lay awake at night thinking about those noises you made while I was kissing you and wondering how much louder you’d be if instead of your mouth, my tongue was on your—”
“Welcome to the club, Ken. It’s distracting when all I can think about is you. Now you get it.”
“But yes, I do love your attention.” “Because you’re obsessed with me.”
“This is why I came in here in the first place, and I almost forgot. Wanted to give you a hug and tell you how much I missed you this week. Stop avoiding me, Kenny. I don’t like it.”
Our wedding song is on full blast as Isaiah makes his way to the plate, but before he gets there, he turns back in my direction. With the entire stadium singing the song I walked down the aisle to, Isaiah extends his bat, points at me, and winks. He fucking winks. It’s the moment reality hits me… Miller was right. I think I might have a crush on my husband.
The difference is she can have me. She can have fucking all of me. She only needs to ask.
It’s an out because I’m a lovesick idiot who can’t stand to see her leave. I might talk a big game, but she will always have the upper hand when it comes to us.
“And have you rub out my groin in public? Wasn’t exactly trying to let the boys see just how hard I get for my wife.”
“Here’s the thing, Ken.” Reaching out, he cradles the back of my head, thumb dusting over my jaw. “You’re going to have to set the pace because I have craved you here, in my bed, since the day we met, and that need has only gotten worse now that I know you. Regardless of whatever bullshit I said while under the spell that was Chili’s, the truth is, I’d fuck you right now if you asked me to. I’d go slow if that’s what you wanted. Or I’d make it rough. But I also can’t read your mind, so again, I’m going to need you to use your words and set the pace.”
“I know. I see you, Kenny, even if you haven’t been looking at me.”
