Love is when he gives you a piece of your soul that you never knew was missing. Torquato Tasso
The guy standing a few feet away was drop-dead gorgeous—a shock of blond hair catching the light, piercing blue eyes, and a physique that looked like he’d come straight from the gym. It took a few seconds to recognize him—Brody Tanner, the new D-man who’d been traded to the Warriors over the summer.
What was I supposed to say? I couldn’t exactly ask him to step behind a tree with me.
My heart sped up, and I couldn’t resist giving him a once-over. Argh! Me Gabe, you Brody. Me want to drag you home.
I locked the door behind me like Gabe was hot on my heels. My heart hammered, and my hands shook so violently it took three tries to unclip Otto’s leash. The second he trotted off, I rushed into the living room and collapsed onto the sofa like the drama queen I’d become.
But no, the little traitor remained glued to Gabe’s feet, looking up at him adoringly.
“What the fuck, Gabe? I know he’s blond, but he’s a big boy. I thought you liked your guys skinnier.”
“Well, if you’re open to giving women a go, I could introduce you to quite a few.” I barked out a laugh. “Thanks, but I’m not available for that team. Got drafted by the other one around the day I was born.”
“Come on, Chief. I’ve been watching you two all night. You’ve barely taken your eyes off him, and he’s been looking at you like you’re a superhero.”
Why was I so afraid when the past couldn’t reach me anymore? The beatings had bruised me, but I’d healed. The sneers and whispers had carved scars into me, but they hadn’t destroyed me. Now, holding back from Gabe wasn’t protecting me. It was keeping me trapped in a fear that was hurting him too. We both deserved better.
“You’ve turned my world into something so wonderful, it’s hard to think it’s real. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I wake up and just look at you. I can hardly breathe because I can’t believe I get to be the one beside you.”
Life was extraordinary, and I wouldn’t let myself forget it. Not now, not ever.
I realized dreams don’t only happen when you’re asleep. They’re what you build together when you’re awake, and ours was just beginning.
