In the Middle Ages, Lilith appeared in The Alphabet of Ben Sira, a satirical Hebrew text, and introduced her as Adam’s first wife. She is all the things she was before, but more. Lilith refuses to lay beneath Adam during sex, which Adam believes is her rightful place. Lilith’s argument is that they were created from the same earth and therefore equal. When Lilith pronounced God’s name, she grows wings and flies away. I’m sure I don’t need to point out that Lilith only became a demon once she refused to submit to the will of her husband…right?
