It isn’t disease that’s contagious in my ward, Captain. It’s dissent. Anarchy and rebellion spread like a wildfire. And what do you do with a fire? You blockade it. Trap it behind a wall. Give it nowhere else to go until it burns itself out and dies a quiet death.
Do you know much about metalwork, Captain? I do. It’s under the most unbearable conditions that the sharpest, most dangerous weapons are forged. And we are dangerous, Captain. She’s turned us all into weapons.
“Ignorance is no excuse for disrespect,”
I enjoyed the king’s protection. But protection did not mean kindness, and it certainly didn’t mean respect.
“Humans are usually weak, fickle creatures, but I’ll admit, I admire this one’s loyalty. She values her family over everything else. There’s something to be said for that.”
Looking at him made me feel like I couldn’t catch my breath.
“I don’t hate your kind. I’m just disappointed by how breakable you are. If I held you down and fucked you the way I’m imagining fucking you right now, I doubt that you’d survive it.”
“Yeah. Right. I’m just… going to kiss you. And you’re just going to sit there. You aren’t going to move a muscle. You’re not even going to kiss me back?” Gods above, saying it out loud made it sound even more ridiculous. Kingfisher just stared at me. “Find out.”
He held me so tight now that he was definitely leaving bruises. I wanted them. I wanted to remember this. In the years to come, when I looked back at this moment, I would be glad that I’d taken the leap and jumped.
This was the kiss to end all kisses. Demanding, urgent, and carnal.
Always pay attention to the fine print. The devil’s in the details.
To avoid far more serious pain, sometimes we have to endure a little sting. Sometimes, some of us have to inflict it. You say it so mockingly, but I do care about your well-being. You’re important.
“Urgh! Do you have to be so difficult?” His eyes danced. “It isn’t mandatory, but I do enjoy it.” “Kingfisher!”
“There’s every way,” Fisher rumbled, his eyes darkening. “I’d know the smell of you anywhere. On anyone. I’d know it blind and in the dark. Across a fucking sea. I’d be able to scent you—”
You are soft. You are fragile. You are vulnerable. You are a newborn fawn, stumbling around in the dark, surrounded by predators with very sharp teeth. I am the thing that exists on the other side of the dark. I’m the thing that puts the fear of the gods into the monsters who would eat you bones and all.”
but nothing could replace the scent of mint and midnight forest in my nose.
“Careful,” he growled. “It’s dangerous to speak so flippantly about things you do not understand.”
I hated him, I did. But you couldn’t hate something without caring about it just a little, too.
“Because she is moonlight. The mist that shrouds the mountains. The bite of electricity in the air before a storm. The smoke that rolls across a battlefield before the killing starts. You have no idea what she is. What she could be. You should call her Majesty.”
“I don’t want bright and happy,” he whispered roughly. “I want real.”
Fuck me. Please fuck me. Take me. Own me.
I’m going to mark you in every way imaginable, so that everyone knows you’re fucking mine.
Ruin me.
She is the dawn. She is the moon. She is the sky. She is oxygen in our lungs.
“Don’t you dare die on my watch, Saeris Fane! Fisher will never forgive me if his sole reason for living is torn to pieces on her first fucking battlefield.”
“My personal life isn’t up for public discussion.”
I don’t just throw my hands up and accept defeat when things get hard. I’m honestly shocked to learn that you do.”
My soul was on fire, and I didn’t care if I burned for all eternity. So long as I was burning with him, then so be it.
He would be my end, this male. He would claim my better days and carry me during my worst. He would show me the meaning of ecstasy and drown me in it until I fucking died.
“Nobody will ever fuck you the way I’m about to fuck you, Saeris Fane. I’m about to introduce you to all seven gods. When you meet them, don’t forget to tell them I’m the one you worship on your knees.”
“My lips to kiss. My mouth to fuck.”
It was kill or be killed, and I knew what I had to do to win.
“In nature, there is a counterweight to everything, child. Light has darkness. Life has death. Joy has sorrow. And good has evil. That law applies, no matter which realm you exist in,”
In the dark, I observed the universe, and the universe observed me back.
“There are two kinds of forever, Alchemist. One is heaven. The other is hell. It doesn’t matter what I do. Make sure you choose your version of immortality wisely.”
