One, Dante was going to be my fiancé. Two, we might kill each other before we ever made it to the altar.
Whether I liked her or not, Vivian was my fiancée, and I was getting damn tired of hearing her name leave his mouth.
Vivian’s laugh evoked a strange sensation in my chest. Heartburn? Investigate later.
“Next time you want to mark your ‘territory,’ you might as well urinate in a circle around me,” Vivian said after Kai left. “It’ll be more subtle.”
“You forget.” I pressed my fingers against her nape, forcing her to look up at me. “You’re my fiancée. Not Kai’s. Not anyone else’s. I don’t give a fuck how handsome they are or what type of accent they have. You’re mine, and no one…” I dipped my head, my lips brushing hers with each word. “Touches what’s mine.”
dealing with people whose heads were so far up their asses they’d require surgery to see daylight.
“How does he look at me?” Janis smiled. “Like he never wants to look away.”
It was always a little colder when he wasn’t home.
“I hate the idea of you touching anyone else, or anyone else touching you. I hate that other people can make you laugh in a way I can’t. I hate how I feel around you, like you’re the only person that can make me lose control when I. Don’t. Lose. Control.”
“Because you’re mine.” His teeth scored my neck. “You wear my ring. You’ve come on my face and hand. You live in my head all the fucking time, even if I don’t want you to...” His palm slid to my hip, where his fingers dug grooves into my skin. “And God, I want to punish you for driving me so damn crazy. Every. Single. Day.”
“I’m the only one who gets to see you like this.” His voice turned harsh. “You”—thrust—”are”—thrust—”my”—thrust—”wife.”
“You can’t see the stars in New York,” Dante said. “So I brought the stars to you.”
It was like watching a beautiful, vibrant rose wither before my eyes.
“Se sapessi il potere che hai su di me,” I said, my voice ragged.
She looked so beautiful I almost couldn’t believe she was real.
Logic told me I’d already stolen my moments with her tonight and that I needed to distance myself before I fell any deeper. Emotion told me to fuck logic and tell it to shove its reason up its ass.
Jesus. I supposed a Brooklyn yoga instructor named Leaf was better than a mafia princess. Higher chance of turning my brother vegan, lower chance of getting him killed.
“Because I’m trying to forget I have an annoying as fuck brother with terrible taste in women.”
but you’ve always been a fighter. So fucking fight.”
“You’ve been gone less than a week and I already feel like I’ve spent an eternity in hell.”
“I love you, Vivian. More than I could ever hate your father. And more than I ever thought I was capable of.”
“Give me time, mia cara. That’s all I need, besides you.”
“For ever making you feel unwanted when you’re the only person I’ve ever loved.”
What he did was awful, but he’s still our father, Vivi.” “At what point is that not enough?”
“Per te aspetterei per sempre, amore mio.” “Spero non ci vorrà così tanto.“
“Yes. One that reminds me very much of you. Beautiful, rare, and difficult as hell to find…but worth every minute it took to get there.” My face softened. “I spent thirty-seven years thinking my perfect match didn’t exist. You proved me wrong in less than one. And even though we didn’t do it right the first time, I’m hoping you’ll give me a chance to prove myself a second time.” My pulse thumped with nerves as the most important question of my life left my mouth. “Vivian Lau, will you marry me?”
A part of me would always find my way to her. She was my North Star, the brightest jewel in my sky.
The crowd erupted into cheers and whistles. I barely heard them. I was too busy with my wife. Wife. The word sent an electric thrill down my spine.
“I never claimed to be virtuous, sweetheart. Sinning is more fun.” Another wicked grin. “As you’ll find out tonight.”
