“How didn’t I see it before?” she whispers. “What, sweetheart?” “The devil in your gaze,” she whispers, and my lips tip up in a grin. “I’m never getting away from you, am I?”
“Are they dead?” she asks calmly, knowing exactly where I went. Maybe my girl knows more about my depth of obsession than I thought. “No, not yet.”
“Want them to be? Say the word and I’ll kill them.” She watches me for a moment. “You would, wouldn’t you? If I said so, you’d kill everyone who hurt me.”
“Isn’t that right, puppy?” I grab his chin, pulling him closer, and his eyes dilate. “You’re mine, little puppy, aren’t you? Bark for me.” He barks then grins after. “Good boy.”
Tonight, my girl didn’t run, not even from my live confession, and when that rando tried to move in on her territory? Fuck, it was so hot watching her lay her claim.
My ex-husband wouldn’t even be seen at my side at awards shows after being together for years, and my father wouldn’t even protect me although he was my dad, yet this man, this stranger, changed his entire life to be in mine.
What did I ever do to deserve all of this?” This isn’t the woman I love. It’s the child who was neglected and hurt.
“I am not going anywhere, Fallon. Cry and scream all you want. You’ve been so strong, baby, so fucking strong, but you don’t need to be anymore. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere. I will never hurt you, but I will spend every day apologizing to you for the way this world hurt you.”
These eyes . . . they saved me. Apologize, Fallon.” “I—” I swallow as I stare into my eyes. He waits, not letting me escape. “I’m sorry for not loving you enough. I’m sorry for believing everything they said. I’m sorry for hating the shape of you, the color of you, the size of you when you kept me alive and housed my heart and soul. I’m sorry for loving everyone else more than you when you are all I have.”
“I knew you loved me, Fallon, even if you could never say the words. It was in your eyes when you looked at me, in your kiss, your touch, your words, and your actions.
“The moon doesn’t exist without the sun,” I remind him. His eyes smolder as he watches me, and he tugs me closer until I’m practically lying on him despite the fact he nearly died hours ago.
“And the sun can’t exist without the moon. There isn’t a world in this universe where I would want to live without you, Fallon. Don’t you see that?
“They told me you were awake. I didn’t—” “Shh.” I point at Fallon. I might like Elijah, might even call him a friend, but if he wakes my woman, I will end him.
“The doctor said you were awake, said it was a miracle. You want to know what I told them?” I tilt my head, watching him even as I brush my hand over Fallon’s head to keep her asleep. “Nothing is impossible when it comes to Kage, not if it has to do with his girl.”
What a great match, huh? You’re both fucking insane.” “Rude,” Fallon grumbles. “Your voice is so loud, Elijah.” His eyes widen, and he glances from me to her before he ducks out of the room, rushing away.
Adrenaline maybe? “We’re taking root, like these flowers, baby,” he promises. “We’ll keep growing together, keep loving and finding happiness.”
It’s your body, your choice. I don’t need kids to be happy. I just need you.” “I can’t do it, Kage,” I whisper, my voice fearful but also filled with understanding. “You don’t owe me or anyone an explanation.”
You were born for more than making another generation though. Just because you have a womb doesn’t mean you have to use it.
