His parents had a talent for making him feel unwanted, and I hated that for him. His father then took it out on me.
“I’m really proud of you. I know I was angry and heartbroken when you left, but it looks like you’ve made a good life for yourself. I’m happy you got the fresh start you wanted.”
“I’m sorry I had to start over without you. Not a day goes by that I haven’t thought about you. Wonderin’ how you were doing. If you were happy and safe. If a man was treatin’ you right. My biggest regret in life was havin’ to walk away from you.”
“Serena Mae.” He tilts his head, and those soulful brown eyes light up every nerve under my skin. “You named her after my grandmother?” I can’t help but smile. “I knew how much you loved her, and I loved her name. I wanted to honor you somehow.”
Ayden You’re still so goddamn beautiful.
She’s going to fall in love with him. Inevitably, he will with her as well. It’s not only my heart on the line. Now it’s our daughter’s, too.
Ayden I was being a gentleman this time, but when I see you next, I might not have the willpower to keep my lips off yours. I hope you have a good flight.
Laney I want to trust you, Ayden. I really do. But you broke my heart, and I’m scared you’ll do it again. Ayden I know, sweetheart. I have a lot of making up to do, and I promise I won’t stop until I do.
For the past three weeks, I’ve felt like a new man. A new reason to get up in the morning. A new reason to smile. And it’s due to two ladies who have my heart in a chokehold.
Laney’s gaze meets mine as she smiles wide, and next to her stands Serena with half a dozen balloons with a variety of Happy Birthday Dad and Happy Father’s Day written on them. Laney holds up a large piece of white plasterboard that reads: Picking up the hottest cowboy in Texas. And it’s decorated with pictures of Laney and Serena.
“What kinda arrangement?” “His family would stop meddlin’ in his love life and”—I brace myself for the words I have to force out of my mouth—“your dad threatened to take Serena if I couldn’t prove I could support her on my own. Gettin’ married killed two birds with one stone.”
“I didn’t bring any condoms with me, so if you sneak into my bed tonight, just know I fully intend to come inside you. Take that warnin’ and decide if that’s what you want.”
“You seem to have forgotten, Laney Bennett, you’re the love of my life. My soulmate. My forever. I’ve never stopped lovin’ you, sweetheart, and nothin’ you could do or say would ever make me resent you.”
Now be a good girl and come on my face.”
“I want you, Ayden. Fuck me, please.” “Such a good girl usin’ her manners.”
I’ve made my decision before we leave the museum, but I want to talk to Serena first. This has to be something she wants too. If she’s on board, then we’re moving to Tennessee.
