“So, if it’s a machine, it can be broken, right?”
“I think the important part is it makes you forget terrible things,” I say.
“Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease,” he muses. “What disease?” “Incompetence. You can’t ignore it, or it spreads.”
“Look at them all. Survivors. During the Dark Days, people burned books to stay alive. We certainly did. But not the Heavensbees. They remained stinking rich, even when the best families were reduced to squalor.”
“No, but I do. And I will orchestrate your death based on your behavior from here on out. You decide what you want Lenore Dove and your mother and that dear little brother of yours to see. You can die clean and fair, or we can open the Games with the slowest, most agonizing death ever to befall a tribute. And yes, you should be thanking me for giving you the option.”
“Snow lands on top.”
At least the Trinkets aren’t mean, just clueless,
“Listen, I’m going to be a real jerk in my interview. It’s something my team worked up, but I will never hurt you, okay? Or any of the Newcomers. That’s a promise.” “We know that,” says Wellie, eyes full of trust.
“Yes, you’re right. If it gets discovered, my next meal will probably be a large platter of poisoned oysters. But I risked it because I need you to trust me, Haymitch. More importantly, I need you to trust the information I’m about to give you.” I’m completely lost. “What information?” “About how to break the arena.”
“No more implicit submission for you, Haymitch Abernathy. Blow that water tank sky high. The entire country needs you to.”
ones deemed fated to destroy humanity because of their ability to replicate any scenario using any person. “And in mere seconds!” He snaps his fingers to emphasize their speed. “I guess it was the right thing to do, given our natures. We almost wiped ourselves out even without them, so you can imagine. But oh, the possibilities!”
I wonder how Wyatt died and immediately feel certain he was protecting Lou Lou, the way no one had ever protected him. Including me. I ran off and left all the Newcomers to fend for one another. I know I had to if I was going to carry out Beetee’s plan, but it sure doesn’t feel good.
Whatever else she may be, Maysilee Donner is not a turncoat.
When I hook Wyatt’s token around my neck, it’s like having both him and Maysilee with me.
I say my good-byes to those I love. Burdock and Blair. Hattie. Ma and Sid. And finally, Lenore Dove, my rare and radiant girl. I try not to be scared.
I slide my knife into his belt, muss his hair like I do Sid’s, and say, “Best ally ever.”
Ampert’s been swallowed up by the Capitol, and his coffin will hold only these pearly white bones.
“Oh, I’ve got piles of food, but tragically, no silverware.” One side of her mouth curls up. She pulls a pocketknife and a fork twisted out of a piece of wire from her pocket. “We’re covered.”
a cloud of bean and ham hock soup steam dampens my face. Mags. Trying to reach us, to let us know we are not alone in our pain, to give us strength to go on. Tears fill my eyes, forcing me to admit my presence in the only world I know. Not an imaginary one. The one where I am in the Hunger Games for real.
Being tributes and not killing each other . . . looking out for each other with no questions asked . . . that’s family, I guess.
