For Petridi magic was cursed to be only as strong as the memory they sacrificed to fuel it. It was a curse they knew little else about.
“They’re barbed, those memories of the past, you know.” She tsked. “If you try to take them out, they tear you to ribbons. Better to leave them in. Come to terms with them. Find out how they shape you and learn to live with it.”
“Magic is like love. Once it breaks your heart, well, it’s hard to come back from that.”
“You want a compliment?” he whispered in her ear, his breath warm against her skin. “Every time I look at you, I see the allure of a thousand wistful dreams. You vex me every moment we are together and even more so when we’re apart, but I would be remiss to let that color the truth of you. Your stubbornness and loyalty are the very things that dare the universe to be daring in return. And I find myself fantasizing of a dozen ways to use that clever tongue.”
“When you guard yourself against the potential of emotional damage, it’s fear that’s in control, not you.
Because we’re all a mess in some way, Opie. The point is to find someone whose baggage goes with yours.”
“I think pursuing your dream is its own kind of magic,” Calliope said, frowning. “There’s nothing mundane about building a future that makes your soul sing.”
“You see,” Eléa said in a falsely dulcet tone, “I don’t think you are. Knowing full well that my brother would never address me in such a manner and knowing that Calliope would tear down any man who dared use that tone, I can only imagine you’ve lost your head for a moment. We’ll wait while you find it.”
“Hope doesn’t have to be a blazing fire,” Thalia said, her voice growing gentler. “Sometimes, it’s just a flicker in the darkness, but it’s enough to guide us through.”
“I would say ‘I’d die for you,’ ” he said in a low voice, tracing her cheek, the line of her jaw, outlining her lips. “But what’s the point in that? I would live for you.
