These two key proteins are the “thyroid Peroxidase” and the “thyroglobulin” and when these are attacked and destroyed by auto-antibodies, they are referred to as the “anti-thyroidperoxidase” and “anti-thyroglobulin” antibodies (abbreviated on blood lab tests as “Anti-TPO” and anti-TG”). These eventually cause enough damage and destruction to the thyroid gland as to cause it to manufacture abnormally low levels of thyroid hormone, which reduces the speed of metabolism in the body.
