Kai went from room to room after that. He fiddled with the television, turning it on before immediately shutting it off when he was met with painted women screeching at each other from couches. They sounded a bit like Sascha when he was worked up.

“Why do you only cover your shoulders? Why not your chest or, like, your belly?” Kai’s brow furrowed. “That would cover my most vulnerable areas.” “Um, yeah. Exactly.” “It would be a sign of weakness.” “Oh, of course.” It took everything in Sascha to contain his eye roll. Maybe Kai was more his type than he’d thought. That was maybe the dumbest thing he’d ever heard.

Then a chipper voice rang out. “Hello! I’m Jay. You must be the demon Sascha summoned.” Kai growled again, and then there was an answering growl from the other side, but the voice rose in volume to be heard over the din. “Alexei didn’t believe it, but I told him you never know. You’re very large, and those wings are super impressive. But I think Alexei would like to see his brother now. We won’t hurt him. We’re very nice, I promise.”

Jay turned his attention to Kai again. “May I see your wings again?” he asked politely. “No.” “Okay.” Jay nodded amiably before tucking himself up against Alexei again. He was wearing a highlighter-yellow sweatshirt with a tie-dye heart on the chest. It was disconcertingly hideous.

He cleared his throat. “Um, Alexei, maybe you and Jay should be heading back to Colorado?” “What? Why?” Jay looked back and forth between them. “Is it because I wanted to copy your robe? I don’t have to get the exact same one.”

People were staring, as they seemed to do no matter what when Kai was around. Although, an almost equal number were staring at Jay and Alexei, which could either have been due to Alexei’s size and looks or the….unique dance moves Jay was busting out. “It’s like a robot having a seizure,” Sascha murmured, watching in awe.

He would feed his mate, lack of resources be damned. He stared down at the little device, unsure where to begin. Should he just goggle it? He tried painstakingly typing out “need bagels for mate,” but nothing useful came up.
