I knelt before her. Her mate. Her protector. I pledged my allegiance, letting the crowd of onlookers see that I worshipped at her feet and a move against her was a move against me. I could sense the power coursing through both our veins—her light and my dark feeding off of each other—and I knew that together there was nothing we couldn’t face.
“I love you. I don’t care what blood runs in your veins. I don’t care about your magic or how powerful it will make you. I love you—all of you. The power and the weakness and the human and the creature. Nothing will change that.”
“What if I change?” I forced myself to ask even as my heart pounded inside me. “If you change, I will love you more just as I do with every minute that passes,”
“There will only be you for the rest of my life.” “For eternity,” I echoed our earlier vow. He nodded. “For eternity.”
“I will burn down the world before I ever let anyone take you from me again.”
“I have come to swear my allegiance to you.” I think you did that several times last night. Aloud, she said, “You’re the first to do that.” It was a loaded statement—one meant to catch the attention of everyone present. “Then it is an honor,” I said loudly enough for everyone gathered to hear. I knelt before her. “I offer you my body to protect you. I offer you my heart to cherish you. I offer you my blood to sustain you.”
“I trust you with my life, my soul, my magic.” I kissed her again, moving higher up her leg. “You are my queen.” “And you are my king,” she murmured.
“I’ve waited lifetimes for you, and no matter what else is going on in our lives, I will never take our love for granted. I want to marry you. I want to kiss my bride and dance with her and cut cake and make love to my wife.”
“Forever with you would not be long enough for me.” “Good thing we have eternity,” I murmured.
