For years afterward, he will riffle through his memories of this place he considers home, layering them on top of one another like stacks of rice paper, trying to remember what was when and never quite seeing the full picture.

“You wear your emotions everywhere—on your face, in your words, in the way you move. But it’s not because you can’t hide it. You just don’t want to. If you wanted to, you would be adept at hiding your emotions. You are like an octopus; you can change your skin to match the sand or sea.”
