“…may you say the things I have tried to say long after I am not here to say them…”
I was expected to conform to the ways of an upper-class lady, but I was more interested in the companionship of the books in the family library, more interested in folklore and mythology, than birthday parties and sports teams.
“I believe in equal pay for women,” said Mr. Thompson in between his bites. “A woman can do just as good a job, if not better, than a man. So why shouldn’t she be paid equally?”
Holden, with his sparkling eyes and devious grin. The thought brought a smile to my face and a fleeting softness to my chest.
He laughed, leaning back in his chair. “You are so nosy. Has anyone ever told you that?” “As a matter of fact, yes.”
Holden leaned over, whispering something in my ear as we made our way to the table. “I’ll show you one day.”
“I used to write books when I was little,”
“‘We loved with a love that was more than love,’”
But O Heart! Heart! Heart! O the bleeding drops of red…’” “‘Where on the deck my captain lies, fallen cold and dead,’”
“‘O captain, my captain.’”
He split a nod between his friends. “She’s braver than the two of you put together.”
“Because hell is empty and all the devils are here?” “Because no one who was at the Western Front could believe in God.”
“I’ll try my best,” I promised, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand. “To look after him in the ways you can’t.”
“Are you taking me somewhere to kill me?” “Not today,” Theo joked.
I write so that oil does not spew from my mouth as I speak—so that I will not combust if a match comes near.
“I tried to hang myself a few months ago. I just wanted to sleep. To really sleep.” “Did someone…” “The rope broke and I fell.” His voice quivered as he spoke. “No one knows.”
“We cannot be tame spectators.”
“Compliments to us,” she replied with a laugh. “Watch now, she’ll marry that man.”
“It seems irresponsible to promise forever when you don’t know what forever looks like.”
“You don’t mind that I’m a witch, do you?”
It’s all the great poets have written about and has hardly to do with desires of the flesh.
“To the whispers of the universe,” he said.
If only those treasures were not so fragile as they are precious and beautiful.’”
But he did leave, and I watched him like a coward from behind the safety of the glass.
“You are my favorite person in the whole world,” I whispered.
You are without a doubt, the greatest highlight of my life.
And what I assume you shall assume For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you
“I think he’s where the yellow flowers are.”
One I loved with a passionate longing, Born of worship and fierce despair, Dreamed that Heaven were only happy If at length I should find him there.
“Write a goddamn masterpiece, Lou,” he replied. “That’s what you’re going to do with it.”
“The universe whispered back to me.”
“The web of our life is of a mingled yarn.”
“Unexpected upheaval.”
The Reckoner.
“He told me once that of all the things in his life he was proud of, his relationship with you was the first.”
And I’d forgotten that like Holden, he too had a reputation. That trying to hold onto Dane was like trying to hold onto water.
“It’s a Chinese legend that a red thread of fate runs between two people that are always destined to find each other, regardless of time or circumstances.” He showed me the other half tied to his wrist. “It can be tangled and stretched but it can’t be broken.”
“They say that time heals all wounds…” “But the void is bittersweet,”
