I set my bag on the chair. “Ta-da!” I unfurl the fabric and release a cloud of colorful themed confetti that flies out in a ticker tape parade of red and green glitter dicks.

“You have a cat,” I say, stunned. “The rumors are true.” I spin around, swatting his arm. “Stop it! You never even dropped a hint that you had a cat. You didn’t mention it at dinner or in your office dos and don’ts.” “I guess there was so much else we covered, it slipped my mind,” he says, but there’s something else in his eyes—the hint of an excuse? A cover-up? I’m not sure. “Well, you ordered me to come early so we could pull this off.” I park my hands on my hips. “Now I learn you’ve been hiding a cat?” A cat who’s…a little in love with Wilder. The feline is rubbing against his leg. Purring. “Is your cat marking you?” With amused resignation, he bends to pick up the critter. “She was supposed to be Mac’s. A few years ago, she wanted to adopt a cat, so I took her to Little Friends, and she picked this cat. Then, once we returned home, the cat…well, she picked me.”

Ughhh & he’s a cat dadd 😍! I’m obsessed.

Wilder: Also, I made a dinner reservation for the four of you at Gabriel’s, a restaurant next to the class, and arranged for a penthouse suite at The Resort if you want to make it into a full-on girls’ night out.

He didn’t wait for me to take him up on his offer. He just did it. And I just love the way he takes control sometimes. Like a boss.

“A battery fell in it from the smoke alarm.” My brow furrows. Something’s missing there. “Is the smoke alarm not working then?” She winces. “Yes. Maybe. I think so?” “Did you use the toaster?” “No. I tried to get the battery out but it was stuck, so I skipped breakfast.” I take a beat to process all that. “Go. Get ready. I’ll take care of it.” “Really? Thank you. I was going to do it, but⁠—” “I’ve got it, Fable.”

I snag some extra pillows from the bed then join her on the floor, positioning the pillows under her back so it’s comfy for my woman.
