“I’ve loved your mom at her weakest, at her strongest, at her most broken. And she’s loved me at mine. There’s never been a day where I haven’t loved her.”
“We do what we can, the best we can, when we can. And we hope that’s enough.”
“Did you believe in Santa?” I ask Charlie. “No.” That’s all he says, but like Jane and Moffy, he also never ruined it for the rest of us.
“I love her more than life itself. I’ve never loved anyone like that. Just Luna.” I take a breath and somehow meet Lily’s eyes. “I could tell you my intentions are to keep loving her like she deserves to be loved. But I’m not aiming to love Luna. It’s never been a goal to love her. Our love existed before I even knew it could. It’s there. It’ll always be there. For better or for better—‘cause life is only worse without her.”
“Charlie,” Uncle Stokes begins. “Stand up, please.” Charlie rolls his eyes—well, a partial eye roll. It seemed to stop midway. He stands from the table. “Out in front,” Mr. Wagner requests. “Right,” Charlie says dryly. He rounds the table so the board can get a good look at him. “Appraise the cattle.” Xander nearly chokes on a sip of Lightning Bolt! Eliot is grinning beside me and says under his breath, “Dig that grave, brother.”
She chomps them, and fuck me, I’m in love. Drop everything, I’ll die for her kind of love. She’s the last name I’ll whisper on my death bed kind of love. The universe makes no sense without her kind of love. It will be just her and me until the end of time kind of love.
“It’s been written in the stars,” she says with all the love of every timeline, of the past and present and our future. “And this—it can never be unwritten.” I’m almost knocked back. How could she know…? “You…?” “I remember.”
“I remember.” She presses her forehead to mine, her cheeks wet. “I’ve realized…that I could never truly forget.” I do the only thing that makes sense. I kiss the moon.
Every piece of who I am has led me to this place with you.”
