“Papi said we had broken the law by coming to the United States, but back then I didn’t understand much about laws. All I could think of was why there would be a law that would prevent children from being with their father.
Writing my immigrant story was an act of rebellion. It was a way of pushing back against a society that forces its immigrants—especially immigrants of color—to hide or deny who they are. Writing my own story on my own terms was liberating. Empowering.
