Spending all of my time with someone who constantly made me laugh, challenged me, and actually listened to the things I said was as easy as breathing.
I tease, flinging my scrunchie at him, which he proceeds to pick up from the ground and slide onto his wrist.
Nate turns the doorknob and opens the door to leave. “No, Mi. It’ll only ever be you.”
Mia always jokes that being in the NFL allows me to get whatever I want. If that were true though, I’d probably be a lot happier.
I hear a light sigh on the other end. “That’s my girl.”
A quick smile curves on my lips. Something that’s been forced lately, except for when I’m around Mia.
Everyone loves Mia Clark, she’s a ray of goddamn sunshine.
When my mind searches for peace, it’s her face I see and her voice I hear.
My best friend is the goddamn sunshine in my life when everything around me is dark and gray.
“Spending time with you is my favorite part of any day. I’ll actually take offense if you try to replace me.”
It’s always been this way with Nate. Easy. Comfortable. We’re constantly in our own little bubble and it’s always felt like my safe place, his too I think.
“It’s just… did you know Nate keeps a collection of your scrunchies in his bathroom drawer? He wears one every game during warm-ups. I asked about it once when we were together, he didn’t even try to hide the fact that they were yours.”
Being best friends with Mia is everything to me, but my God, do I need her to be more.
Anyone who doesn’t see what a treasure you are has no right being a part of your life.”
I think I secretly like that when she ends up giving them back, they smell a little like her.
“Why do you think you’d fail?” “What?” she asks. “What on Earth gives you the impression that you can’t do this? Because the Mia I know can do anything.”
“Oh, so you were paying attention?” “To you? Always.”
“Well, how can I help?” “You’re already helping.” His eyes close as we lie here, while the sun is nearly setting. “By making you take a road trip to relax?” Nate smiles while his eyes are still closed and then shakes his head back and forth. His blue eyes open and connect with mine, sending my pulse into a frenzy. “By existing.”
but when I look back, it’s always been her.
“I won’t touch you, not until you tell me that’s what you want. But I’ll talk you through it. You need a release, so let me use my words to give you one. I can tell you exactly how you should be played with. Use your fingers, this toy if you want, but I promise I can make you come with just my words.”
God, I’m so turned on right now—and by my best friend, of all people.
“Put this vibrator right on your clit and let me see you ride your hand until you fucking come for me.”
“Might take her a minute to realize it, but souls that are meant to be together will always find their way to one another.”
“I can’t believe you remember that.” He shifts himself back towards the television. “Don’t look so surprised, Smalls. Everything with you is a core memory.”
Fuck. New weakness unlocked. Mia’s fucking hip bones.
“I want you to open wider for me.”
“Fuck. Look at you, Mia. Spread open like this. Such a good girl.”
“Messy girl,” I say, as I lean back on my heels, watching her chest continue to pulse up and down. My tongue pulls out and swipes over my lips before I take two fingers and bring them up to my mouth and suck. Just as I thought. Sweetest fucking thing I’ve ever tasted.
“Fuck it,” he mutters under his breath, just before his lips meet mine.
It’s fireworks and explosions. It’s a Hallmark holiday movie and a passionate romance novel. It’s playful, yet possessive. It’s everything.
I wasn’t good enough for you back then. Hell, I hope I’m good enough for you now. But I’m going to try like my life depends on it to be the man you need. You won’t lose me, Smalls. I promise. This is it for me, you’re it.”
“I’m just… surprised is all. I’m nothing like the women you typically go for.”
“None of those women were you.” His steel blue eyes focus on mine. “What?” “They were not you.”
“It’s always been you, Mia. I tried to trick myself into thinking I could be with someone else, that I could want someone else.” His head shakes back and forth with a nearly sarcastic scoff. “But the truth is, I’ve just always been avoiding the fact that I didn’t actually want any of them. Because I want you.” “I want you,” he repeats.
“We’re together, Mia. I’m yours. And I’m not going to wait another fucking second without taking what’s always been mine.”
“Is someone coming?” she asks frantically. “No. I’d never let anyone else see my girl like this.”
I want to help end the stigma surrounding athletes and mental health. I want to be part of the solution, instead of just another statistic in the column.
“Your love language is definitely physical touch,” I say as his hands run down my back, cupping my ass. “You are my love language.”
I whisper against her ear, “You can take it. My cock was made for you, Mia. It’s the perfect fit.”
“Scream, Mia. Let everyone in this building hear you.”
“The Post-it notes,” she whispers. “You wrote down everything you love about me and plastered them all over my apartment?”
The only thing in this room is a Post-it note on the far wall. “It’ll only ever be you.”
“Eres mi sol, mi luna y todas mis estrellas.” You are my sun, my moon and all my stars. “I love you. I’ve loved you since before I really even knew what that word meant. I just knew it was you. It was always supposed to be you.”
“Seeing you in that today, knowing that you’re really mine, makes the sight so much sweeter.”
Her hands go up into a heart shape and I mimic the gesture, not giving a fuck if anyone sees. Because I’m in love with my best friend and I don’t care who knows it.
She’s my eternal sunshine and I’m so glad that we found our way out of the friend zone, because this right here is exactly what I want. My purpose. My future. The place I’m constantly running towards is her. My end zone is Mia.
