He had Addison’s disease, a rare endocrine disorder that left him dependent on cortisol injections and hormones secreted through an implant in his thigh. The Addison’s was so serious that Joe kept Jack’s meds locked in safety deposit boxes all over Europe in case Jack had an attack abroad.
