Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed

Their pilot lost communication with ground control and flew into the storm’s eye. He couldn’t tell if the plane

was upside down, right side up, pulling toward the skies or plummeting to earth. A wing was shorn off. One engine fell, then the other. The tail detached. The little plane gained speed as it headed straight for a mountain.

She was given no last name.

Three American astronauts were hurtling toward the moon, a seemingly impossible goal set forth by JFK in his 1961 inaugural address. If they survived, they would land on the moon’s surface shortly before 11:00 p.m. that night.
