“What man was this who had shadows and darkness at his very fingertips?”
“Be everything you truly are. That’s all I’ll ever ask of you, my silver one.”
Beware the dread curse of Three, The sword, the spear, the grail’s mystery. Blood calls to blood, the dark shall rise, Forged by the gods under sacred skies. The words written on the stone which held the sword Excalibur.
“You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in this or any world.” They had been Orcades’s last words as she looked upon Medra. Just after the cryptic riddle she had cited. “Who meets their death devoid of love shall surely face their end. But one who gives their soul away, eternity extends.”
Be everything you truly are. That’s all I’ll ever ask of you, my silver one.”
What man was this who had shadows and darkness at his very fingertips? But something in his darkness called to my own. He was my perfect complement in every way. “I am the luckiest woman, mortal or fae, in all of Aercanum to have a mate such as you,” I said slowly. “Did you know that, Kairos Draven Venator? Have I told you?” He grinned like the rogue he was. “No, but you should. Daily.”
“I see forever with you by my side. Because long after these scars have faded away to nothing, I’ll still be standing beside you. You and I? We’re eternal.”
“You’re not fae, Morgan. Not after what you’ve done here today. You’re a goddess.” He gave a low chuckle, and I flinched. “Don’t say that,” I replied uneasily. “What a ridiculous thing to say.” But it was too late. The Three-cursed man was already kneeling in the dirt at my feet, his hands tracing the curves of my hips. “You’re my goddess, and I’m your knight,” he said as he brought his face up to kiss my stomach and laughed again.
I was fae. That was bad enough. I was no goddess.
We don’t need a mortal family or a fucked up fae one. We already have our own. Mortal and fae. A little fucked up, sure. But ours.”
“I won’t have you dying for me.” “That’s not your choice to make,” he said shortly. “And if the gods are willing, we’ll both come out of this. But if I die saving your life, then it’s a choice I’m ready to make.” “And I for you, you stubborn fucking fae,” I spat.
“Will it be?” I whispered. “Our end? I won’t let him have me, Draven. No matter what.” My mate leaned forward and brushed his hand over my cheek as softly as a butterfly’s wings. “I would never let that happen, silver one. Never.”
It was all so much trouble. This business of being alive.
“What’s so funny?” Draven asked, riding up beside me. I looked at him and felt wicked. “I was simply thinking about the way your cock felt in my mouth this morning. So long and hard and thick.” I watched as my mate’s eyes widened slightly. Then something incredible happened. “By the Three, Draven,” I said with delight. “Are you actually blushing?”
“There is darkness in all of our souls. But there is also light. Just because the darkness threatens doesn’t mean the light won’t win out in the end.”
I screamed in rage, in sorrow. I screamed in guilt. “Ferrum deae,” I screamed to the heavens. “Ferrum deae.” Iron of the goddess. Mine. Not yours, Father. When I finally looked back down, Excalibur was no longer a sword. Instead a sickle rested in my hands, curved like a crescent moon.
“Did you know that I will love you forever? That I would die for you?” I took a small step towards him. “I will love you for a hundred thousand years. And then a hundred thousand more after that.”
Feeling unexpectedly moved with sympathy for the boy in the bed, I reached out a hand and touched his cheek. The world around me quivered and disappeared.
No one has ever asked. No one has ever cared. No one ever came.
I am sorry for what you have lost. I go now, but I will do what I can to aid you. One last time.
“Oh, my child.” My father sighed. “Oh, Marzanna.
And then, with a blinding flash of light, I imploded. Like a prisoner breaking free of the chains that had bound them for so long, I surrendered myself to the darkness, wrapping my manacles around myself and my grandfather and strangling us with them. We were both one with the darkness now. As my vision faded to black, I reached out my mind and felt the heartbeat of the stars.
Love, the one force in the universe that no one could ever fully explain. Love, the candle in the dark that led us through the night and softened all our sorrows. Without love, life was a starved and empty thing, for there was no hope, no joy without it. My father had never, ever learned that lesson. But with love, there was strength. Love held us up and kept us from falling. When we found it, we clung to it and we never let go. Love made us strive to be better than we were. Love lifted us. Love carried us. Love made our flaws forgettable. Love was our saving grace. Love was the greatest
