Despite all the mistakes that have been made—how much of this place has already been impaired or traded away, how swiftly the gains that were made long ago are presently in danger of being rolled back or erased, how egregiously the descendants of the land’s original inhabitants have been marginalized and written out of the story—it struck me then, as it does now, that it’s a miracle we have any park at all.
