Søren Kierkegaard once said, “Some things are true when whispered but become false when shouted.” It is also true that some things become cheap when shouted. When one hears a glib and easy witness, one wonders, where is that awesome distance before God? How can anyone talk freely in God’s presence? When one repeatedly experiences the inability to speak when deeply and profoundly moved, then surely Christian witnesses must draw their breath in pain to tell this story. And those closest to God seem to be the ones most sensitive to the strong inclination to keep silence before him.
